As a leading innovator in the appliance industry, it appears that GE has hit yet another home run with their new GE Profile Super Capacity front loading washer and dryer.
This new pair from GE features a huge 4.2 cu. ft. capacity washing machine with one of the largest openings in the industry at 15 inches, which makes loading and unloading this machine a breeze. The matching dryer is an astounding 7.5 cu. ft., with their DuoDry moisture sensing system which automatically ends the drying cycle when the machine has determined that the clothes are dry. There are also some other unique features about this pair that may make them a great addition to your home.
We’ll start with the washer first, which by itself is pretty amazing. Like most front loading machines, the WPDH8800J senses how full the tub is by using GE’s ‘H2ition’ wash system, which automatically senses the correct load size and then fills with the appropriate amount of water. However, GE takes this process one step further and solves one of the biggest dilemmas people face when they changeover from a traditional top loading washing machine to a front loader.
As you’re probably aware, front loading washers use approximately 2/3 less water than a traditional top loading machine. Since they do use so much less water, it is also recommended that you use a high efficiency (HE) detergent. This is a lower sudsing formula that allows the detergent to be completely rinsed from the clothing using less water during your wash cycle. Unfortunately, one of the most difficult things for all of us to try and figure out is just how much detergent we really need to use for each load of laundry. Since every load is different, the amount of detergent needs to be adjusted as well.
GE has solved that problem.
With the new optional SmartDispense pedestal, you no longer need to do anything other than place your clothes inside the machine, select your cycle, and then walk away. The washer will then sense how much water that load of laundry requires, and automatically dispense the correct amount of detergent to use and even the right amount of fabric softener. This is a huge benefit, and for a couple of reasons. First, you’ll obviously save money over time with the amount of detergent you’re saving, since in most cases people do tend to use too much each time they do laundry. The pedestal is designed to hold approximately 6-months of laundry detergent, with two tanks for detergent and one for fabric softener. The reason why there are two for the detergent is that you’ll always have a full one should the other be empty, allowing you time to refill the empty one. There are also indicators on the washing machine to alert you if any of them have run out.

However, the biggest benefit of this feature is that you’ll prolong the life of your machine. Most appliance servicers will probably tell you that one of the most common reasons for service calls with washers are generally caused by the build-up of laundry detergent from people using too much of it. While all machines come with a use and care guide, not all of them really explain very well just how much detergent to use based on every combination of fabrics and load sizes. Needless to say GE has finally eliminated the guesswork.
The washer also features GE’s HydroHeater, which regulates the temperature of the water and heats it to the correct temperature, with 5 temperature settings along with a ‘Sanitize’ cycle. The machine also has an amazing maximum spin speed of 1300rpm, which will extract the majority of moisture from your clothes before you place them into the huge 7.5 cu. ft. dryer. The two machines are also interconnected via a cable that uses GE’s CleanSpeak technology, which automatically sets the dryer to the correct temperature and moisture settings based on the load that was just done in the washer. Yet another way that GE has simplified doing laundry.
Lastly, the washer also includes a Stain Inspector feature, which provides more than 40 different preprogrammed stain treatments. So if you have any stains that you need to get out, whether they be wine, grass, etc., the machine will even help you get those out of your clothes.
The dryer is also quite amazing. With its large capacity and stainless steel interior, that alone is enough to give your reason to be impressed. However, it also has a built-in dryer rack and hanger clip for more drying options, and also uses a reverse tumble, which means that every few minutes the drum will change directions to give you much faster and more even drying performance for your fabrics.
So if you’re looking for a new laundry pair, this is definitely one that you may want to consider. When you factor in the capacity and convenience that the WPDH8800J and DPH880EG(GJ – gas version) both offer, you’ll find that GE has finally made the task of doing laundry a breeze.
